Staff Stories

At Private Media we are surrounded by some of the smartest and most interesting people in Australia. No… make that the planet. Actually, make it the universe. And we make our living out of selling yarns.

I had been trying to come up with ways to build up our internal community more… and thought, why not tap into one of our greatest strengths?

Storytelling.

This idea is actually stolen from Dean Yates, our mental health strategist, based on an initiative he led at Reuters to help normalise the conversation around mental illness. The blogs were a sledgehammer against stigma and shame, communalised what many had suffered in silence and made staff feel more comfortable seeking help.

So here is our collection of Staff Stories – where we hope to strengthen our sense of community by learning about each other’s experiences and sharing different perspectives. And potentially even have our minds opened in little unexpected ways.

I would love love love to have contributions from anyone around the business. There is no qualifier, everyone has their own personal story to tell.

Blog categories are:

  • Mental health
  • Inclusion & Diversity
  • Wellbeing
  • Hobbies / other

Comments and engagement with stories are encouraged! It is a bold move to share something personal with colleagues. I only ask that we create a psychologically safe environment for authors and commenters.

Burnout… the reason for my lame coffee order

Those in the Melbourne office may have said or heard this before: “… a soy decaf what?” I’ve had workplace burnout three times (I didn’t know that was what it was called the first time). This is not something I am proud of, as clearly it is evidence that I don’t learn from past experience! […]

(Just About) Managing, Remote

Every day SmartCompany covers the shifting world of work, while at the same time being active participants ourselves in the great global social experiment that is the “post-pandemic workplace”. We know from recent audience surveys that most of our readers are working in similar hybrid environments to ours, with only 13% back in the office […]

More than a hobby

For as long as I’ve worked in media, I’ve been a filmmaker.  Over 8 years, I’ve solely dedicated my filmmaking to Ukraine. This passion stems from my childhood — my grandparents, Baba and Dido, were Ukrainian immigrants, and proud ones at that. That passion rubbed off on me, even after they passed away.  It’s quite […]

A feeling called home

Exactly a year (and a few days ago) my partner and I moved to Australia. Over 52 years of existence between the two of us neatly packed into a total of two suitcases and two carry-ons. There was so much we left behind… not just in terms of things, but people and experiences.  I know […]

Community, volunteering at Triple R and free time

“Free time”, what we have left when we stop being paid or otherwise obliged to be somewhere and do something, is a loaded phrase, one that can mean a lot of different things. Let me tell you what it has come to mean to me.  The studio from which community radio station Triple R broadcasts […]

Set free by wild geese

I used to be in prison. A prison of unease that I was not living up to my full potential. Self-judgement that was with me all the time. It truly felt like a prison. For so long I raced around trying this-and-that, and by ‘trying’, I mean giving something several years to prove itself. I’d […]

Here’s why you should — and shouldn’t — work remotely

Lockdowns provided a baptism of fire for many traditional office jobs, who were quickly faced with transitioning an entire team into remote work. Video collaboration software Zoom surged in popularity, pets were overwhelmed with the sudden company around the home, and elbows young and old jostled for space at the dinner table.  In February 2020, I […]

So are you just a diversity hire?

This week is International Women’s Day and whilst I am hesitant to pile on to the IWD flood of content - it would be weird to pass the day without some sort of acknowledgement! So rather than posting something token, I wanted to attempt to answer the second part of that journalist’s question
